Mines at Fort McKinley
Fort McKinely constructed and stored TNT-armed underwater mines as part of the Coastal Artillery defense. The mines stored at Fort McKinley were placed strategically in Casco Bay.
Mines were stored in a structure across the cove from the Quartermaster's wharf (now the main ferry dock) and were guided down the hill, onto the mine wharf, and then onto boats via a tramway system pulled by mules. The mine boathouse was constructed in 1906 (and torn down in 1943) and the mine wharf and tramway was completed in 1910.
After WWII, the remaining mines were decommissioned and removed from Fort McKinley.
